While depictions in African stone sculptures may repeat, the patterns in the brown Serpentine stone cannot be replicated, making each large garden statue unique. The artist carves the stone using a diamond tipped chisel. It is then sanded for hours through varying degrees of sandpaper until smooth. The sculpture is then heated and a polish is melted into the stone. Finally it is buffered to leave a wonderfully tactile surface, almost irresistible to touch. Washington Msonza, Born 1966. Washington was born in Makumbe, Domboshava district in Zimbabwe. Washington learned to sculpt in Chitungwiza where he spent a lot of his spare time around his brother in-law Albert Mamvura at his workshop. Albert leant his skill from the renowned Nicholas Mukomberanwa an in turn passed the skills down to Washington. Inspired by famous artist like Locadia Ndandarika, Gedion Nyanhongo, Working amongst such accomplished sculptors enhanced Washington’s skills.
Washington started off in 1988 as an assistant making small sculptures but now his sculptures are exhibited in the finest galleries globally. In 1991 his work was exhibited at the annual Heritage Exhibition of the Zimbabwe National Gallery. His sculptures have also gained popularity with private collectors in South Africa, Germany, Austria, The Netherlands, Canada and the USA where he has many commissioned works. Washington has led several international international workshops including the International Changchun Sculpture Symposium in China.
